After four baseline days, 12 subjects were totally sleep-deprived for two nights. Total sleep deprivation was followed by either (1) uninterrupted recovery sleep for five nights (the control group, N = 4); (2) two nights of REM deprivation and then three nights of uninterrupted recovery sleep (this REM-deprived group was allowed all nonREM sleep, N = 4); or (3) two mghts of stage 4 sleep deprivation and then three nights of uninterrupted sleep (this group was allowed all stages of sleep but stage 4, N = 4).
Agnew, Webb, and Williams (1967), however, did report some psychological differences between six REM-deprived and six stage 4-deprived subjects. The stage 4-deprived subjects displayed more hypochondriacal and depressive reactions while the REM-deprived subjects showed increased irritability and emotional lability. These differences were small and not significant, however, and they need to be replicated, but they offer some support to the findings Sleep Deprivation 21 by Clemes and Dement (1967).
