It has been criticized for its lack of sophistication due in part to Carolina’s use of nonstandard grammar and sometimes unexpected vocabulary. In this translation, we have sought to convey the texture of Carolina’s Portuguese prose as clearly as possible in English. Carolina often mixes present-and past-tense verbs, and these have been preserved in English.
