We talked about where to start. I wanted James to have some choice, and we looked at different distinct phases in his life. During the course of our conversation, it became quite clear to me that he could remember a lot about earlier events – his period in foster care in Kent, being sexually abused, his mother’s violent partners – going back to when he was about six years old. This made it difficult for me to know where to start, because the list appeared to represent so many difficult and painful events in James’ life.
